Home   /   “We’ve made it a real fortress” – England players and manager react after qualifying for Euro 2024

Despite being 1-0 down, goals from Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford secured a 3-1 win for the ‘Three Lions’ over rivals Italy, as well as a place in the 2024 European Championship.

Manager Gareth Southgate was over-the-moon with the performance his team displayed, giving his boys the credit they fully deserve: “They’re incredible to work with. So hungry, so eager to learn. I thought the performance was relentless.”

Fans will remember when Italy came to Wembley Stadium back in 2021, where England lost the Euro 2020 final on home soil. But Southgate assured fans that there have definitely been improvements since then: “There’s a big difference in our team from previous years, much more physical in the midfield.”

Despite the win, Southgate stated that the remaining qualifiers are still important to play: “We need to make sure we’re one of the top seeds next month, so we need to win the next two games.”

England captain and double-scorer Harry Kane was also delighted with his team’s qualification, despite it being tough: “Qualifiers are never easy; people expect us to get into the tournament, but we got a tough group this time but credit to the boys. We’ve made it a real fortress.”
