Frank Lampard suggested Chelsea’s injury time 2-1 defeat at Wolves might have resulted from overconfidence.

Lampard said: “Maybe the lads think we are playing well, and when you think you are playing well things like this can happen.”

After an uneventful first half, Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock in the 49th minute with a goal-line technology-awarded volley, before Daniel Podence equalised in the 66th. Having had a penalty rightly rescinded by a VAR check, Pedro Neto broke late to strike a 95th minute winner.

N’Golo Kante said: “By trying to win the game we conceded many counter-attacks and lost the game.”

Lampard agreed: “If you’re not playing that well, which we weren’t tonight, hang on to 1-0, play, control the game, don’t allow counter-attacks, and we did.”

Lampard drew a line under the performance: “This is the Premier League and if you don’t perform you lose games, we’ve got West Ham on Monday.”

After losing in injury time themselves last time out, Nuno Espirito Santo was happy with his team’s desire, saying: “We had a big disappointment against (Aston) Villa, and we reacted well.”

Goal-scorer Neto also praised the team-spirit: “The work we have done to pass these two losses, we came here today with joy.”
