Ollie Watkins’ 10th strike of the campaign inside two minutes helped Aston Villa to a 1-0 victory over Arsenal at Villa Park.

The win saw Aston Villa complete their first Premier League double over Arsenal for 28 years.

Aston Villa took the lead after just 70 seconds when Bertrand Traore took advantage of some slack Arsenal play, setting up Watkins to bundle the ball home past Mathew Ryan in the Arsenal goal, via a deflection off Rob Holding.

Arsenal pushed for the equaliser before half-time when Emiliano Martinez brilliantly tipped over a Granit Xhaka free-kick.

The visitors started the second-half brightly and created plenty of opportunities. Nicolas Pepe had two chances, one saved by Martinez and another which flew wide. Substitute Martin Odegaard also had a chance in the closing stages, but blazed his shot over the bar.

Aston Villa had chances to wrap up the game when Jack Grealish had a shot well saved by Ryan, making his debut in the Arsenal goal, and Watkins pulled an effort wide after a good pass from Grealish.

The win sees Aston Villa register their 11th clean sheet of the campaign, and return back to winning ways after defeat to West Ham in midweek, climbing up to eighth in the table.

Arsenal remain in 10th, nine points off the Champions League places, suffering their second successive defeat.
