Brighton Beach lost one of the prestigious awards due to poor water quality in 2023.
According to the FEE report, 12 beaches in South East England have received a Blue Flag award for water quality, safety and environmental education and information. However, Brighton Beach is not eligible this year for the award due to water contamination.
A study by the SEO marketing agency Reboot found that the eastern part of Brighton Sea near Palace Pier had the highest spike in e.coli counts since the pandemic’s beginning, with a 670 per cent increase.
The study also indicated the presence of intestinal enterococci in the seawater.
Brighton & Hove resident said, “I did go swimming last summer, and the water was quite smelly; it smells like sewage in the east side of the beach between Palace Pier and Marina.
“I didn’t find a lot of plastics or rubbish, but the sea smelled bad for some reason. After that day, I decided not to swim in Brighton Beach because of the sewage smell”.
