It’s a battle of the two South Coast sides this evening as Brighton welcome back two thousand home fans for their game against Southampton.

Brighton will climb above Arsenal and move into 15th if they win, whereas Southampton can move into 5th with victory tonight, Reece Heaton will take you through the action as it happens.

Tariq Lamptey returns from suspension and replaces Neil Maupay who drops to the bench for precaution after picking up an injury against Liverpool last week.

Adam Lallana is unavailable after a groin injury.

Southampton are unchanged from the team that lost 3 – 2 to Manchester United last week after going 2 – 0 up.

Danny Ings returns to the squad and is on the bench after a month out with a knee injury.

KICK-OFF

Southampton get the game kicked off on a cold Monday night in Falmer.

1′ Djenepo has the first effort of the game, but his shot is less than eventful as it goes miles wide off goal.

3′ Chance for Brighton, Danny Welbeck sets off Solly March on the left wing and cuts it back to the striker in the box, but his shot is saved comfortably by Alex McCarthy.

There’s something to help motivate those Brighton fans on during the game.

5′ Brighton push forward well again, Pascal Gross finds himself in acres of space on the right hand side and see’s his shot saved by McCarthy, although the German was caught offside beforehand.

6′ Kyle Walker-Peters cuts inside from the right but his shot doesn’t trouble the Brighton net, both teams having their fair share of chances early on.

11′ A well taken free kick on the right hand side from Pascal Gross finds Lewis Dunk in good space but the Skipper’s header is not great as it goes miles off target, really should’ve done better.

12′ First booking of the night goes to Moussa Djenepo after a foul on Tariq Lamptey.

18′ Ben White is controlling the speed of play well in midfield considering it’s not his position, Joel Veltman drops to centre-back.

24′ PENALTY FOR BRIGHTON!

James Ward-Prowse is penalised for a handball inside the box and David Coote awards a penalty for Brighton, Pascal Gross steps up…

25′ GOAL – Brighton 1 – 0 Southampton (Pascal Gross) Confidently dispatched!

Pascal Gross sends Alex McCarthy the wrong way and slots his penalty to give the Seagulls the lead, the home fans will be buzzing.

28′ Southampton respond with a succession of free kicks on the left and right hand side of play, but both are dealt with by the Brighton defence.

The Seagulls then hit back on the counter with Tariq Lamptey and his blistering pace, he manages to win a corner for the hosts.

31′ A good chance for Pascal Gross to make it 2 – 0 as Danny Welbeck heads it down to the German in the box, but his shot plants into row z.

33′ Referee David Coote isn’t happy with Lewis Dunk after the Brighton captain has an altercation about something, he manages to escape a booking.

39′ Brighton are preventing Southampton from creating any chances, Theo Walcott has no other option but to have an attempt on goal, but his attempt goes wide.

A big goal for Southampton right before half time, James Ward-Prowse delivers the corner into the box and up steps Jannik Vestergaard who rises above everyone else to head it in for the equaliser, Graham Potter won’t be impressed.

45′ Late free kick for Brighton in the first half, Pascal Gross swings the delivery in from the right hand side and finds Adam Webster pouncing but the defenders shot is off target, opportunity missed for the hosts.

HALF TIME – Brighton 1 – 1 Southampton

Jannik Vestergaard’s header cancels out Pascal Gross’s penalty as the sides go in level at the half time whistle.

A great stat for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men as their team respond late in the first half.

KICK-OFF

The hosts get the game back underway at The Amex, can they pick themselves up after Southampton’s late leveller?

46′ Romeu is booked for a foul on Pascal Gross thirty yards from goal, the midfielder isn’t too amused with the referee’s decision…

52′ Some decent attacks from Brighton, the ball falls to Bissouma on the edge of the box and his shot finds Aaron Connolly who tries to make an attempt but the striker is flagged offside.

55′ Lewis Dunk picks up a booking after an attempted slide tackle left a mark on Che Adams.

58′ Southampton nearly go in front as Theo Walcott’s cuts onto his right and see’s his shot just go wide of goal. Danny Ings did well to start the move for The Saints.

62′ Danny Ings does brilliantly to convert his header from a tight angle towards goal but Matt Ryan collects, a positive half time change from Ralph Hasenhuttl.

64′ A change up top for Brighton as they attempt to take the lead again.

65′ Tariq Lamptey sets off on the right hand side and cuts it back to Pascal Gross who’s shot goes over, Brighton need to starting hitting the target more often if they are to take all three points from this game.

67′ Neil Maupay finds Solly March making a run on the left and feeds it into him but the wing-backs shot is taken poorly and goes out for a goal kick.

73′ An instant impact from Nathan Redmond as Danny Ings controls the ball beautifully in the box and loops it over to Redmond making the run but the winger can’t direct his shot on target.

After a lenghty VAR check, the final decision is that it was a foul inside of the box! The fans let out their frustration for VAR as they are convinced the foul happened outside of the box.

80′ GOAL – Brighton 1 – 2 Southampton (Danny Ings) No mistake from Ings as he gives Southampton the lead in the remaining ten minutes left at the Amex!

As for Brighton, they still sit four points above the drop zone without a home win this season.
