Home   /   Wolves out of 3rd round FA after 0-1 loss to Liverpool – Match Report.

Liverpool advance to the 4th round of the FA Cup after a class display that fans have not seen Liverpool produce in a long time. Harvey Elliot really made the difference in the midfield with a super strike from the edge of the area and a clear play of passion from the England international.

Liverpool will face Brighton again in the next round and will be fearful of the Seagulls, who are in some form in the league and beat Liverpool 3-0 last time they faced each other.

Gakpo makes the starting lineup in his first Fa Cup fixture

Liverpool hoped to make a change to their recent form with a win against Wolves tonight and progress in the cup, when their league are close to finished.

Harvey Elliot struck early with a wonderful strike that caught josé sa out, who was surprisingly quite far off his line. His goal within 10 minutes provided Liverpool their dream start to the game. Wolves have had a poor start and  can’t seem to get in this game and fouls from both sides emulate the cagey affair so far.

Elliot scores a stunner from range

Keita lays Carvalho through who doesn’t fail to dispatch it into the top left corner. His celebrations are short lived as the goal is ruled out for a clear offside. Liverpool are playing with a new found confidence and are running rings around wolves tonight so far. Wolves can’t get near and need to apply the pressure for a chance to get back into this game.

Tsimikas chases down Raul Jiminez

At half time Liverpool will be proud how they have pressed and retained possession, leaving wolves with little time on the ball and not much movement off the ball. Wolves show more promise into the second half and are less flat, with more activity in their midfield. Keita slips Gakpo through and the dutchman tries to scoop it over Jose Sa but he reads it anyway. The effort is ruled offside. If Gakpo could just hold his run slightly he’d have scored a couple tonight.

Substitute Nat Phillips is carded for a challenge on Matheus Cunha after the Brazillian just beats him to the ball and the challenge is late. Ruben Neves has an oppertunity to score from the freekick and he dips it up and over the wall, which is tipped clear by Kelleher, but the referee can’t see the contact and awards a goal kick to Liverpool.

Adams blitzes past Tsimikas and loops a ball towards Jiminez, who nods it towards goal but a towering Joe Gomez denies his effort with some great defending. It seems Wolves have done all they can as the game comes to a close. Some brilliant ball retention in the first half to create the first goal, then a solid defensive display in the second half to keep Wolves at bay.

Elliot is awarded MOTM.
