Raul Jimenez put the hosts in front with 10 minutes to go but a Josh Murphy free-kick gave Steve Bruce’s side a point to take back on the road.

Espirito Santo said: “We were without problems until we got the goal we deserved, and then we should manage the game better. I have to see the Newcastle goal again but the ball cannot go on that side of the wall, it cannot go in.

“We were patient, we were a threat, we didn’t concede many chances and it is a game that we should finish with a victory. The mistake is that we need to be more clinical, we had many chances but we did not test the goalkeeper too many times. We were the better team.”

Bruce praised his side’s resilience in today’s match and insisted that his team have to be hard to beat.

“You can have as many attackers as you want but you have to get the ball. We haven’t anyone natural in the front six to go and get the ball. There was a certain resilience about us.”
