Manchester United 9-0 Southampton

An extraordinary game took place at Old Trafford as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side put nine past Southampton to equal the highest win by a Premier League side.
Arguably the most important incident in the game happened after just two minutes, as Alex Jankewitz on his debut put in a high challenge on Scott McTominay which referee, Mike Dean, felt was dangerous enough to warrant producing a red card to send the 19-year-old down the tunnel.
The game started to open up for the home side and they took the lead after 18 minutes as Aaron Wan-Bissaka was found at the back post by Luke Shaw with the full-back tapping in from close range.
United then added a second 10 minutes later when Mason Greenwood found Marcus Rashford on the penalty spot who volleyed his effort passed Alex McCarthy.
The Red Devils added two more before the break, the third goal of the night coming from a Rashford cross that was turned in by Jan Bednarek. Four minutes later Edinson Cavani was found free in the six yard-box by Shaw as the Uruguayan headed home from close range.
Anthony Martial who was subbed on at half time, scored the first of his two goals in the 68th minute as he latched onto a Bruno Fernandes through ball and fired past the Southampton keeper.
McTominay was the next to add to Southampton’s misery as his low driven effort flew past McCarthy to make it 6-0 to the home side.
A night to forget for Ralph Hasenhüttl was capped off as Bednarek was sent off for a last ditch challenge on Martial in the area. Fernandes took the resulting penalty and made it 7-0.
United then added two more before the final whistle as Martial latched onto Wan-Bissaka’s cross to score his second of the game and Daniel James rounded off a great night for Solskjaer’s men as he was found by Fernandes in the six yard-box to make it 9-0.
