Home   /   Southampton vs Manchester United – Player Ratings

A brilliant game at St. Mary’s Stadium as Southampton hosted Manchester United. Southampton went 2-0 up at half time and Manchester United came back to win 3-2 in outstanding fashion.

Here’s how the players did.

Southampton –

Alex McCarthy – Played well in the first half denying Manchester United on multiple occasions. The double save was outstanding. Conceding three in the second half like he did though he will be disappointed. Far from perfect but still a good performance at times. 6.2

Kyle Walker-Peters – Caused trouble on the attack at times but failed to do anything significant with the ball. He saw the most of the ball however with 89 touches. He would have wanted to create more with that. 6

Jannick Vestergaard – Not a great performance from him today. Gave the ball away on a few occasions and should definetly be more of a presence in the air than he was today. 5

Jan Bednarek – Got one of Southampton’s goals today from the corner. At times he also did very well defensively preventing Manchester United from scoring more. 7

Ryan Bertrand – Bertrand played fairly average today. Had a chance that wasn’t very well taken but coming forward was from time to time a test for Manchester United. 6.1

Oriol Romeu – Was aggressive in challenges and definetly brought a fight for Southampton. Maybe lucky not to get a booking. His passing was very decent today with the second best pass accuracy in the team (88.9%) only behind James Ward Prowse. 6.9

James Ward-Prowse – Certainly Southampton’s best player today. Created plenty of chances and getting a goal and an assist will make him happy despite the loss. Brilliantly taken freekick and looked dangerous all game. Bit quiet in the second half but remained the real danger in this one. 8

Stuart Armstrong – Had a decent chance in the second half that went wide but when he was on the ball his passes looked dangerous on the attack. Definetly did a good job but will be disappointed not to have taken that chance. 6.4

Moussa Djenepo – Caused problems for the Manchester United defence at times. Wan Bissaka couldn’t deal with him. He created a couple of chances especially on the ball dribbling round defenders. 6.5

Theo Walcott – Created chances for Southampton and looked dangerous at times when running forward with the ball. Another player that will be disappointed to have not score. 6.8

Che Adams – Seemed quiet at times today not really having many shots on goal. However did make a few decent passes to set up chances that weren’t taken. Wasn’t very prolific on the pitch however. 6

Substitutions –

Shane Long – Came on to have an impact on the game. Created nothing of any major significance. Not a single shot on goal which he will be disappointed about. 4.7

Ibrahima Diallo – Another Southampton substitute that didn’t really have an impact. Although he did come on very late on in the game so maybe didn’t have the time to make a real impact. 4.5

Manager –

Ralph Hasenhuttl – Hasenhuttl will be disappointed with his teams performance especially in the second half. They played well from the first goal to the half time whistle and created a few second half chances but couldn’t keep a solid lead. 6

Manchester United –

David De Gea – De Gea struggled and came off early after picking up an injury. He conceded the two Southampton goals but I don’t think he could have done much about either one. 4

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – In some points he struggled defending especially when Djenepo was running at him. Certainly didn’t play terribly but sub par performance at best from him. 5.5

Victor Lindelöf – I thought Lindelöf played fairly well at the back today. Made some important clearances and tackles when we needed it most. Although I feel he could have been defending Jan Bednarek which could have prevented a goal. 6

Harry Maguire – Maguire faced some fast attackers today and his speed has been a downfall in his game at times this season. I feel he played well often being the man to regain possession for Manchester United. 6

Alex Telles – Definetly wasn’t the worst performance but he has played better. He seemed to struggle at times in dealing with the likes of Walker-Peters and some of his passes were a bit sloppy. Despite this he created chances having been given the freedom to go forward. 5.8

Nemanja Matic – Started slowly in the first half but definetly came into his own in the second. He won the ball back 15 times today showing his abilities as a solid defensive midfielder. 7.1

Fred – Had a bit of a sloppy first half having given away the freekick which Ward-Prowse converted. Definetly picked up in his performance come the second half often being the man driving Manchester United forward. 7.5

Donny Van de Beek – Certainly made an impact in his first Premier League start creating lots of chances despite looking uncertain towards the end of the first half. 6.9

Bruno Fernandes – Once again Fernandes showed his class today. Creating chances and getting a goal and an assist to his name as well. Probably could have scored on a few occasions but generally a stellar performance. 8.8

Mason Greenwood – Seemed to lack the deadly finishing we know he has today. Had a brilliant chance to put Manchester United into the lead early on but put it wide. Came off at half time after a disappointing performance. 4

Marcus Rashford – Played well and created lots of chances. He definetly had chances to put Manchester United in front but fought till the end getting the key assist that won the game. 7.4

Substitutions –

Dean Henderson – Came on for De Gea at half time. Looked comfortable but didn’t face anything too threatening. He did the job when he came on and didn’t concede which is always a positive. 5

Edison Cavani – Came on at half time and changed the game completely. Involved in a lot of chances. Two goals and an assist emphasised the near perfect performance from him. 9.6

Brandon Williams – Came on late and helped get Manchester United over the line. Did the job today. 5

Manager –

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – Managed his team well today and the diamond formation is definetly looking good for him. He will be disappointed to concede the two goals he did but the substitution of Cavani certainly changed the tide of the game. 8.2
