Home   /   Paraguay v Argentina – Match Preview

Paraguay take on Argentina in Asunción at 00.00 of Friday UK time.

The game is valuable for matchday 10 of the CONMEBOL 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, as the teams went head-to-head in November of 2020, sharing the spoils with a 1-1.

Premier League players Cristian Romero, Giovani Lo Celso and Emiliano Martinez have all been called up, despite Argentina featuring in the UK’s travel red list.

Newcastle forward Miguel Almiron is the only Premier League player called up from Paraguay.

Argentina are currently second in the group, with 18 points in eight games, after their clash with Brazil was suspended due to coronavirus controversy.
La Selección are unbeaten in 22 games, as their last defeat came in July of 2019 against the Brazilians, who currently lead the group, having won every game.

Paraguay sit in sixth with 11 points, two behind Colombia and Ecuador. They won two games and drew five, with their only defeats coming against Ecuador and Brazil.

The first four places at the end of the 18 games will guarantee straight access to the World Cup finals in Qatar, whilst the fifth team will be set to play an intercontinental play-off.

Lionel Messi is of course a player to watch, with the 34 years-old coming up for his first ever game for the team after leaving Barcelona. The winger scored five goals in qualifiers and is currently Argentina’s top goalscorer.

Lautaro Martinez comes second with three goals. The striker endured a positive start to the season for Inter Milan, with five goals in six Serie A games.

San Lorenzo striker Angel Romero is Paraguay’s top goalscorer so far, contributing to seven out of nine goals for his team. He scored four and assisted three.

Paraguay manager Eduardo Berizzo never won a game against Lionel Scaloni. Ever since the two have both been in charge, there were two draws and a victory for Argentina.
