Spurs break Marseille’s hearts as they top group D

Clement Lenglet’s glancing header pulls the plug on the electric atmosphere in The Stade Vélodrome. Ivan Perisic found the Frenchman’s head from a deep free kick and rose highest to guide the ball into the side netting completely evading the gloves of Pau Lopez.

The final blow was dealt in the last minute of the game as Pierre-Emile Højbjerg smashed home the winner to throw a final dagger into the Marseille hearts with the very final kick of the game.

Marseille dominated Spurs for the entirety of the first half and got what they deserved in the form of a bullet header from Chancel Mbemba. It was the quick thinking from Amine Harit playing a short corner to Jordan Veretout that started the move and Veretout whipped a pinpoint cross to the centre-back who was unmarked at the back post.

But at the end of the day it wasn’t enough. Alexis Sanchez had chances to extend their lead when they were 1-0 up but he failed on two attempts with Hugo Lloris besting him with a few world class saves, meaning they finish rock bottom of the group, despite sitting in first place an hour ago.
