Morocco will compete in the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 1986, as they face 2010 champions Spain.
The ‘Atlas Lions’ topped their group conceding only one goal, which is the fewest in the competition so far. Morocco have never reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Morocco conceded their only goal in the group against Canada, which is the first goal they have conceded under Walid Regragui’s management in seven games.
Spain will be tough opponents as they are unbeaten against African opponents in the World Cup since 1998. They lost 3-2 to Nigeria in 1998 where current manager Luis Enrique started for the Spaniards.
Regragui told Morocco World News: ‘’Eliminating Spain would be a good surprise for us and our country.’’ A win would set up a clash against Portugal or Switzerland.
A goal for Youssef En-Nesyri in this game would mean he is the first Morocco player to score three goals at the World Cup. Meanwhile Spanish striker Alvaro Morata will be looking to score for the fourth World Cup game in a row.
Walid Cheddira looks set to miss out on this game due to an injury picked up in training, while Cezar Azpilicueta is also a doubt.
