Spain boss Luis Enrique admits he has “never been worried about finding goals”, even though they did not start with a recognised striker”

“It is the national team that scores the most goals in all the championships we have been in. We may not have a benchmark player who scores 30 goals but we have Ferran (Torres), Dani Olmo, Marco Asensio, Gavi… I’ve never been worried about finding goals.”

Spain over the years have notoriously played a possession based game, with Spain sides normally dominating the ball and moving it around the pitch freely, pressing without the ball, all things Enrique thought his side demonstrated.

“We were exceptional in our ball handling and finishing, with the same philosophy that the national team has had for years. We were exceptional in pressing.”

Costa Rica came into the game, and tournament, as underdogs, however, they would have expected a better performance and result than the one they displayed. Costa Rica manager Luis Fernando Suarez has said that they all “have to take account of what happened”.

“We couldn’t get the ball and there was nothing in attack from us. I have to admit that we were bad and we all have to take account of what happened.”
