Home   /   Eastleigh v MK Dons: AS IT HAPPENED.

Ben House looks to continue his goal a game form against the Dons today in the clubs first-ever meeting in their history. Will he be able to make it six in six for The Spitfires today against a much tougher opponent? Luke Costello will be taking you through the action as it happens.

MK Dons have failed to make it out of the first round of the FA Cup for the past three years, whereas Eastleigh, who compete two leagues below the League One side in the National League, made it to the second round last season. Eastleigh come into this game full of confidence after a 2-1 win in their last game against Bromley continuing their great start to the season which sees them in sixth place in the National League. Can the Spitfires carry over their hot form into the cup and cause an upset against a Dons side who have struggled early in the season?

Cameron Jerome will be looking to use his Premier League experience to get a win for The Dons today against a side that will not have dealt with many players of his calibre in the past, will he prove too difficult to deal with for the Eastleigh defence?

Can the young Scotsman Ben House get on the scoresheet today against the toughest opponents he will have faced?

Eastleigh line up:

Ben House starts for Eastleigh, can he start making a proper name for himself today by scoring against a League One side.

MK Dons line up:

No Cameron Jerome for the Dons, former Manchester United player Regan Poole starts at centre back.
MK Dons fans are happy with the line up, definitely a strong side, can they break their three year FA Cup second round drought?
Final preparations at the Silverlake Stadium ahead of these teams first clash. Should be an interesting one.

The players stand together around centre circle to remember the brave soldiers who lost and risked their lives during the First World War. Lest we Forget.

Always a powerful image.

The Dons in red getting the ball rolling after the players take the knee. Very nice to see this message spread through all levels of English football.

1″ Eastleigh begin the game with a dangerous attack with Joe Tomlinson putting a teasing ball into the box.

Eastleigh looking dangerous on the wings early having two attacks down either flanks, no crosses trouble the MK Dons defence.

4″ A good ball from Dean Lewington leads to an MK Dons corner after Daniel Harvie’s cross is blocked.

5″ Dons’ Louis Thompson hits the side netting from a drilled shot.

The Dons fans love their Captain Dean Lewington, he will be dangerous down that left side today.

9″ House gets played through early and is just out-muscled in the box and Eastleigh win a corner. Easily could have scored there.

Eastleigh are looking very confident and motivated today, a very fast pace has been set early, it’s looking like it could be a very exciting game.

I’ve seen so many penalties given for tackles like that in the Premier League, what are your thoughts on the moment?

14″ Lasse Sorensen drills a dangerous ball into the box for The Dons after some good play down the left wing, dealt with well by Joe McDonnell.

15″ Carlton Morris uses good skill to beat the Spitfire’s left back and puts another drilled ball into the box that is gobbled up by the keeper.

The corner wasted by Sorensen.

The Dons fans are impressed on how Eastleigh have coped so far playing against a much tougher opposition.

17″ Harvie is called offside after a looping ball in behind.

Spitfire fans are also happy with their very positive start.

19″ Morris takes a curved shot from the left-hand side of the box after a good spell of possession for The Dons. Safe hands from McDonnell again.

MK Dons have started to come into the game now, controlling possession, creating chances and not allowing Eastleigh any space.

22″ Goal kick for Eastleigh after Morris’ cross loops over everyone and out.

23″ Morris wins the ball off Alex Wynter and breaks away down the left but plays a heavy pass out of play. The left side is looking like the main threat for The Dons.

Great chance for Eastleigh defender Andrew Boyce who could have easily scored if he read the path of the ball better. If only it fell to Ben House!

Eastleigh are getting their best chances from long balls over the top, MK Dons’ defence seem to be struggling a little bit with the physicality and pace of the Spitfire players.

Ready for some FA Cup magic.

27″ Eastleigh waste a free-kick after trying to take a quick one. Good idea but a miscommunication between the teammates.

Dons captain Lewington has made over 800 appearances for the club, including appearances for Wimbledon. What a club hero.

32″ Lewington puts a whipped ball into the box which is attacked by The Dons attack but a foul is given.

Great hold-up play from Morris previous to this, I can see a Milton Keynes goal soon.

35″ Ben House is booked after a very rash challenge on the edge of the box. Morris and Sorensen are stood over the ball.

36″ Terrible free-kick, chance wasted.

Ben House making his presence known.

Eastleigh have struggled to carve out a clear cut chance for a while now, the quality gap is starting to show as MK Dons are dominating this game.

40″ Great fake shot by Harvie sends the defender to the shops, the following cross is blocked.

This game could look very different if Boyce capitalised on this big chance.

43″ Thompson cuts inside twice with two good bits of skill, another foul is given in a dangerous area. Poole stands over this one.

44″ Once again, a terrible free-kick. MK Dons may live to regret not taking these very good chances.

45″ Jack Payne drills a long range effort that hits the side netting, very close to going in through a crowd of players. First real chance for Eastleigh in 15 minutes.

Half time. 0-0 here.

MK Dons really need to start creating some more clear-cut chances or they could run the risk of the Spitfires running away with this FA Cup tie. They have looked dangerous on the limited chances they have had and have had the best chance of the half through Andrew Boyce.
Dons fans not happy with the lack of goals this season, should they have looked towards a Premier League veteran in Cameron Jerome who could take advantage of the inexperienced Eastleigh defenders.

The Spitfires kick off the second half.

47″ Stephen Walker uses a nice Ronaldo Chop to create some space for a shot a wins a corner for The Dons.

Eastleigh have scored 13 of their 18 goals this season, are we in for some late FA Cup drama?

50″ Yellow card for Morris as he brings down House.

Was really no need to dive in there, silly booking.

52″ House has a golden opportunity that you would expect him to put away given his form, he absolutely drags the shot though.

It looked written in the stars for House to score there, he seemed to crumble under the pressure a bit there, will be be able to get another chance like that?

55″ Walker is looking like MK Dons main attacking threat so far, running at the Eastleigh defenders with pace and creating chances. He’s won a corner here.

56″ Morris’ header cannons off the post from Harvie’s great corner, great chance to be ahead again for Milton Keynes.

Eastleigh look happy to allow MK Dons to keep possession and carve out chances, they need to get a good spell of possession under their belt.

McDonnell has coped well with anything that has come at him today, looks like a very reliable man between the sticks.

61″ Substitution for MK Dons, Ben Gladwin on for Harvie.

Ben Gladwin has played for 15 clubs in his career so far, bit of a Football League journeyman.

Fresh legs on the wing, can he be the man to influence the game for the Dons?

65″ Thompson takes the ball past Wynter with ease but plays a poor pass instead of pulling the trigger, another good chance gone begging for Milton Keynes.

68″ Double substitution as Scott Frazer and Matthew Sorinola come on for Thompson and Warren O’Hora.

Scott Frazer was rested today, he will be looking to grab a win for the Dons and see them into the second round.

71″ Free-kick lumped into the box by Eastleigh which is met by Boyce again, no real contact though and the ball trickles out for a goal kick.

73″ Morris played through beautifully by Walker but he absolutely shanks his effort from close range. Where was the composure?

I think Cameron Jerome would have thrived in a game like this, slipping, sliding defenders allows players like him with pace to get in behind.

76″ Substitution for The Spitfires, Dan Smith makes way for Tyrone Barnett.

Eastleigh youth coach Jason Brookes said that the ball is a “magnet” to Barnett’s head, can he get a crucial victory header today?

80″ Barnett involved early, whipping in a menacing ball which is dealt with easily by the MK Dons defence.

If this game stays goalless it will go on to extra time and penalties if needed, it will be interesting to see how Eastleigh deal with the attacking bombardment that they about to face in these last 10 minutes.

Great pictures from clash.

84″ Barnett wins another header after a long pumped ball, he looks to be a threat if players start to gamble off him.

86″ Walker uses great trickery like he has all game to get away from Payne but he tries to shoot through too much traffic and the danger is cleared.

87″ Eastleigh have just had a golden opportunity to score again but the chances keep falling to defenders. Wynter misses a free header from no more than six years, easily saved by Lee Nicholls.

A real let off for MK Dons, could have been a real upset there.
Any chance for some stoppage time drama?

Eastleigh are trying to run the clock down whenever they get the ball, they’re happy to play for extra time.

90+3″ Walker’s shot is blocked by Boyce and the game comes to an end.

Full time. 0-0 here at the Silverlake Stadium and extra time awaits.

The Spitfires should 100% be proud of their performance today, very solid all over the pitch and have looked very good defensively against a League One side.

Eastleigh kick off extra time, who has what it takes to advance to the second round of the FA Cup?

93″ Extra time is started off with a comfortable piece of possession by MK Dons, no real chances yet.

94″ McDonnell makes another comfortable save, he hasn’t been properly tested at all this game.

95″ Sam Smart latches onto a cleared ball for Eastleigh, Nicholls reads the cross well and pounces on it.

96″ Substitution for MK Dons, Jay Bird comes on for Sorensen.

98″ Walker finally tests McDonnell with a shot from outside the box that stings the palms of the Eastleigh keeper but dealt with relatively easily.

MK Dons have dictated the pace of this game but haven’t carved out many real goal-scoring opportunities.

101″ Walker uses good strength to get down the left-wing, Smart is starting to get exploited down that flank as he hasn’t stopped running all game.

103″ Poole unleashes a thunderbolt from long range that is tipped over the bar by McDonnell.

What a goal that would have been from Poole.

Eastleigh have no players in the opposition’s half, they have 11 men behind the ball and are trying to take this game to penalties.

Half time in extra time. 0-0.

Fingers crossed for penalties!
Fresh legs for the last 15 minutes of this game, just what Eastleigh needed, their players are looking very tired.

Milton Keynes kick off the second half extra time.

107″ McDonnell with another fantastic save! Lewington’s shot look destined for the bottom right corner but the keeper parries it away.

109″ Walker is down with a head injury, players will be using this time to get water onboard and catch their breath.

Good to see him back his feet, he’s looked very dangerous today.

112″ Danny Hollands really showing what the FA Cup means to these Eastleigh players, he just headed the ball whilst he was on the ground and a Dons player was about to kick it. Great commitment.

Lots of tired legs out there now. Players are really pushing the boundaries out here today.

115″ Freekick given to Eastleigh after a dangerous spell of Milton Keynes possession on the edge of The Spitfire’s box. Small rest bite for the Eastleigh players.

Joe McDonnell or Manuel Neuer? Easy Man of the Match today as he looks to collect his first clean sheet of the season.

The Eastleigh players will be confident going into penalties after their keeper’s performance today, he has been excellent.

120″ Tom Bearwish throws his body on the line and gets kicked instead of the ball, free kick for Eastleigh as we look to go into penalties.

Full time + extra time. 0-0.

Not with McDonnell between the sticks. Nothing has got passed him today.

Barnett takes the first penalty for Eastleigh

Poole takes the first penalty for MK Dons

1-0 Dons

Cav Miley for Eastleigh

Gladwin for the Dons

Third penalty for Eastleigh taken by Tomlinson

Next for the Dons is Morris

Pierce Bird for Eastleigh

Stephen Walker for MK

Next up for Eastleigh it’s Bearwish.

Frazer can win it for the Dons here

Full time. 0-0. MK Dons win 4-3 on penalties.

Heartbreak for Eastleigh as they ran themselves into the ground for 120 minutes against a team two divisions above them to have the game snatched on penalties. So unfortunate but that’s the FA Cup, MK Dons advance to the second round for the first time in three years after dominating Eastleigh for the entirety of the game, a well-deserved victory for Russell Martin’s men.
