Home   /   Celtic v Rangers – Player Ratings

The Old Firm derby took place for the third time this season today. Celtic hosting Rangers at Celtic Park.

After a goal from Mohamed Elyounoussi Celtic took the lead but Rangers equalised through Alfredo Morelos. The final score 1-1.

Here is how I think each of the players did:

Celtic

Scott Bain – Couldn’t have done much about the Morelos goal but made a few decent stops to prevent Rangers from getting more. Most notably stopping the volley from Ryan Kent superbly. 6

Jonjoe Kenny – His Old Firm debut probably one to forget. He didn’t have much of an impact at all and was hardly involved. 4

Diego Laxalt – Came forward and tracked back very well today. Was always around when Celtic got forward especially when it came to linking up the play. 6.5

Kristoffer Ajer – Did his job when it came to keeping Alfredo Morelos quiet. Didn’t face many issues at the back. 7

Stephen Welsh – Had to mark Kent today and faced a few troubles when sticking with him in the first half. He improved as the game went on but certainly had his hands full. 6.5

Callum McGregor – Was involved in a lot of Celtic’s attacks. He provided a few good chances in the game and set up Odsonne Edouard for his assist. 7

Scott Brown – A solid performance from the Celtic captain today in protecting the back four. Did ok when it came to managing Rangers attacks. 6.8

David Turnbull – Was taken off and might have been unlucky to be as he was starting to improve on a poor first half. 5

Ryan Christie – Never really got into the game and was hardly involved whilst on the field. Poor performance. 4.5

Mohamed Elyounoussi – A great performance from the Norway international. His partnership with Edouard in the first half looked good for Celtic and got himself a goal. Couldn’t argue much with his performance. 7.5

Odsonne Edouard – As mentioned, created a good partnership with Elyounoussi in this game and got himself an assist. Wasn’t clinical with his chances though which let him down. 6.9

Substitutions –

Tom Rogic – Didn’t make an impact from the bench and was barely seen. 3

James Forrest – Probably couldn’t do much for the amount of time he was on the field. Didn’t do much off the bench at all. 3.5

Ismaila Soro – Didn’t get much time on the pitch after being put on late into the game. 3

Leigh Griffiths – Didn’t get to play much after coming on in the dying minutes of the game. 3

Manager –

John Kennedy – Celtic seemed to dominate the majority of the game and Kennedy will be happy with that. Probably a bit disappointed though that his players couldn’t go on and win the game. Not a bad managerial performance but certainly not amazing from the man tipped to get the full-time job. 6.5

Rangers –

Allan McGregor – Made some good saves today that prevented Celtic from increasing their lead. Unlucky to have conceded but overall fairly solid performance. 7

Leon Balogun – Really struggled today but was playing out of position. A case of him trying his best in an unnatural place. 5.5

Connor Goldson – Improved as the game went on, getting stuck in a little bit more in the second half. 6

Fillip Helander – Possibly could have done better when it came to the Celtic goal but much like Goldson he improved as the game went on. 6

Borna Barisic – Did very well in keeping Christie quiet and when coming forward put in a few good crosses as he so often does for Rangers. 6.8

Steven Davis – Put in a fantastic performance today making some good passes and putting in a shift in the midfield. 7

Glen Kamara – A tough game for Kamara especially following the events of midweek. He did well but certainly wasn’t at his best today. 6

Joe Aribo – Another Rangers player that probably wasn’t at his best today. Didn’t have much impact going forward other than the odd run that came to nothing. Didn’t hold the same threat as he often does. 5.5

Ianis Hagi – A decent performance but was quiet before coming off. Made a great pass to Kent in the first half but as mentioned he was taken off so probably didn’t do as much as he would have wanted. 6.3

Alfredo Morelos – Was kept quiet by the Celtic defenders for the majority of the game but will be happy to have ended the curse when facing Celtic. Got his goal with a good back post header. 7.5

Ryan Kent – Rangers’ most dangerous player going forward especially in the first half. Unlucky not to score on the volley. Quiet in the second half but played well overall. 8

Substitutions –

Nathan Patterson – Expected to come on with Balogun struggling and did well to keep Celtic quieter going forward. 5.2

Scott Arfield – Was very hard working after coming on for Hagi. Did well but nothing created. 4.5

Kemar Roofe – Came on with 10 minutes to go. Barely touched the ball but probably didn’t have the time to make an impact. 3.2

Scott Wright – Much like Roofe didn’t have much time to show himself and make an impact. 3.4

Manager –

Steven Gerrard – Came in unbeaten and left unbeaten. His team were good but certainly weren’t the team on top for the majority of the game. His team overall in the game were solid but weren’t at their best. Not getting the three points will be frustrating but overall not a bad performance. 6.5
