Home   /   AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan – As it happened

Hi and welcome to Overtime’s live blog of tonights Milan derby, one of the world’s most famous and fiercest rivalries. It’s a huge game for both sides as a win for the hosts could see them maintain pressure on the league leaders (albeit on goal difference) Napoli. For Inter, they currently sit in third, it could allow them to cut the gap on Milan from seven points to four who will no doubt be in high spirits following three wins in their last three.

Milan come into this one boasting a fantastic unbeaten league start of 10 wins and one draw, a record breaking start for them with a win today making it eight wins in a row for the first time since September 2006 under current Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Inter though will be full of confidence given the recent record between the two sides, winning five of the last six and where there were some question marks against how well they would cope with the loss of Romelu Lukaku, they have surely been answered by the acquisition of Edin Dzeko. The former Roma and Manchester City man has scored seven in 11 in the league this season to add to Inter’s overall of 28 (the league’s highest figure).

Both sides go into this one possessing some ruthless stats. The home side have an xG of 1.64 but have a Goal Average of 2.27. For the away side its an xG of 2 and a Goal Average of 2.55. Give either of these a sniff and chances are they will punish you and when take into account that as well as Inter being the highest scorers, their bitter rivals have the second most with 25. Lets hope this points to an entertaining game.

This is a match of youth vs experience as Inter have the leagues third oldest squad with an average age of 28 years-old compared to the hosts who have an average age of 25 years (four years younger than their last league winning side of 2010-11) despite having the leagues oldest player Zlatan Ibrahimovic (40) Theanalyst. One of the games biggest characters is limited to starts this season (seven appearances and two starts) but he does boasts some impressive stats.

Since the start of last season he has an average of a goal every 94 minutes. Could he have the final say in this one? A goal today would mean he would go level with Gunnar Nordhal and Istvan Nyers in the all time goal scorers in Milan derbies on 11. Two behind Giuseppe Meazza and three behind Andriy Shevchenko. Good company.

Criminally underrated player

For Inter they have yet to fail to score in the league but it’s at the other end where they’ve looked a little out of sorts with a clean sheet rate of 27% at home and 17% away from home. Its the same for the hosts as well who have also netted in every league game so far this season. Will it be a first blank for either of these two today?

Not enough talk about Milito in that 2009-10 season. Phenomenal.

Team news incoming….

The big news. Zlatan starts and no Theo Hernandez, who is suspended
Two changes from the win against Sheriff. Ivan Perisic and Hakan Calhanonglu come in for Arturo Vidal and Federico Dimarco.

Lots of talk around Milan and their midfield maestro Franck Kessie. Rumours are suggesting that with his contract talks stalling he could be on his way to the Premier League with Spurs (now under Conte) so far the primary link.

The opportunity now presents itself for Milan to go top. Verona holding the leaders Napoli earlier with 9 men, admittedly they were sent off 88th and 90+3rd minute.

Teams on their way out. Lets pray for a great game.

Davide Calabria and Samir Handanovic meet in the middle for the coin toss. What a keeper he has been over the years for Inter and Udinese.

3 mins-Good chance for Milan to hurt Inter as Rade Krunic catches Alessandro Bastoni in possession on the halfway line, he beats a cynical challenge but his cross to Zlatan Ibrahimovic is easily doubt with.

4 mins-Ibrahimovic almost finds himself on the end of a chip through ball from Franck Kessie but the ball runs out for a corner which Inter easily deal with.

8 mins-PENALTY Wow what is Franck Kessie doing. He’s dawdling on the ball on the edge of his area and Hakan Calhanoglu nips in, and at first it appears that the Turkish international tripped him but the referee Daniele Doveri does superb to notice its Kessie that brings him down. This following a wonderful diagonal pass to Darmian.

VAR checking this….

Its given.

11 mins-GOAL-0-1 Huge courage shown by Calhanoglu to step up for the penalty against his former side and he fires it straight down the middle. First blood Inter and its the former enemy.

14 mins-Rafael Leao looks for an instant reply as he finds space from distance but his shot is straight at Handanovic. Ibrahimovic appeared to be unmarked at the back post, that may have been a better option.

Lots of loose passes so far in this from both teams.

16 mins-Leao nips in on a loose pass just inside the Inter half and he drives into space and fires a fierce strike at Inters goal but again slightly too close to Handanovic. Good contact though.

17 mins-Free kick Milan in a dangerous position….

17 mins-GOAL-1-1 What a response from Milan and its a wicked ball in from Sandro Tonali, Fikayo Tomori runs off in celebration but it appears to have gone in off Stevan De Vrij. What a start to this game and Tomori will be wondering what more he needs to do to get a call up to England.

19 mins-Milan look fired up now with Leao in particular. He resembles another Milan great in George Weah sometimes with the way his gallops forwards. Quick and powerful.

One for the stat fans out there..

Thoroughly enjoyable watch so far. You can certainly see the comparisons with Andrea Pirlo and Sandro Tonali especially with the cross for the goal. Big boots to fill.

25 mins-PENALTY Wow a second penalty for Inter and its another error this time from Fode’ Ballo-Toure as he gets his feet mixed up and Darmian ghosts in before the Senegalese international lunges in an attempt to recover but brings down Matteo Darmian. Stone wall.

Lauturo Martinez steps up for this one…..

27 mins-Penalty Save Its not a bad penalty but what a save from Ciprian Tatarusanu. The stand in keeper got down low to it and denies Inter. This has been a cracker.

This has to be one of the best opening half hours of a game I’ve seen in a while. You know its been a good one when you’re struggling to keep up with the action yourself. Technically in parts it’s been a little messy but you can’t fault the fight by both teams.

32 mins-Tonali next to fire one in but his shot sails off into orbit.

Shots like that always remind me of this.

33 mins-The referee is having a good game himself he’s really letting this one flow. As I say that Milan win a free kick wide right with Tonali being wrestled by the scorer Calhanoglu.

34 mins-Inter clear the free kick but their counter is thwarted by Tomori. Good defending from the former Chelsea man.

Who says Italian football is slow…

37 mins-Leao finds himself in space in the box but his shot fires straight at Handanovic and he lashes the rebound over. He’s getting closer and then further away.

39 mins-Leao is a joy to watch when he gets moving. This time he cuts inside just in the Inter’s half sucking Darmian in before reversing a ball to the overlapping Ballo-Toure. Sadly for them it runs out.

Be interesting to see how the managers tweak this at halftime. From a neutrals point of view I hope it stays the same.

43 mins-Leao is causing Inter problems as the Portugese international draws a foul from Edin Dzeko. Other than some good pressing for the first Inter penalty we’ve not seen much of the Bosnian forward.

44 mins-OFF THE LINE Just as I say that Alessandro Bastoni gets down the left slips it back from the byline towards Dzeko, it misses him but goes to Barella inside the Milan box and his effort is cleared off the line by Ballo-Toure. Making amends for the penalty?

45 mins-Great Chance Inter finishing the stronger of the two now as Lauturo Martinez finds a yard in the box and drags a shot wide.

What a first half that was played at such a high tempo with both sides exchanging blows. Two goals, two penalties, one scored, one missed, this half had everything. Inter finished it strongly but I think so far the score is a fair reflection of the game.

Couldn’t agree more

Teams on their way out. Ante Rebic is warming up but looks like no changes as of yet.

I spoke to soon. Pierre Kalulu is coming on for……I’m not too sure as of yet he’s just receiving instructions.

Its Ballo-Toure coming off.

45 mins-Free kick straightaway for Inter as Calhanoglu is blocked off by Tonali.

15 league games between these two without a red card according to BT. Crazy stat.

48 mins-Looked as though the ref gave an offside against Darmian but his appeals for a hand ball against Kalulu has seen the ref reverse his decision. The cross goes in but Dzeko just gets underneath the cross and it floats over the bar.

49 mins- Ibrahimovic’s first sniff at goal but he’s penalised for a hand ball following a shot wide of the mark. Will we see Giroud? it seems more likely that Rebic will come on to inject some energy at both ends of the field for Milan.

51 mins- Inter force a corner with some quick build up but the resulting set piece is cleared. They’ve started this half positively. Ibrahimovic looking increasingly frustrated.

53 mins-Free kick for Milan in a good position but the delivery was so poor it actually confused the Inter defence and almost leads to a chance for Simon Kjaer.

55 mins-Close Martinez receives a precise through ball in from Barella before leaving Tomori behind and working an angle for himself but his shot deflects out for a corner.

56 mins-Great Chance Perisic dinks a wonderful ball to the back stick for Calhonoglu but his volley is just wide of the far post. He’ll no doubt be feeling he should’ve scored.

58 mins-Substitution Its a double change for Milan and its been needed but I have to say I’m a little surprised at one of the departures. Alexis Saelemaekers and Ante Rebic on with the none existent Brahim Diaz coming off and Leao departing too. I must say I’ve felt the Portugese forward has looked a threat when he’s got on the ball but the two subs will bring more work rate when out of possession and that has what Milan have been lacking in this half.

Rebic is down the left and Saelemaekers is down the right. I hope the latter doesn’t have too much involvement in this game. Thats a difficult one to type quickly especially in a game like this but thankfully it has died down a little bit this half as Inter patiently look to open Milan up.

In case you missed it

64 mins- First bit of positive play from Milan in a while and its the Croatian international Rebic riding a few challenges on the left wing but his cross doesn’t quite reach Ibrahimovic. Jeers ring round the San Siro as there’s a stop in play for Darmian who is down holding his face.

67 mins- Inter seem the more likely this half now but the end product has been lacking. Suddenly Milan break forward though as Kessie slips in Rebic down the left side of the box but his cross/shot is deflected out for a Milan corner.

68 mins-Substitution Barella is off and the experienced Arturo Vidal is on .

68 mins-Milan’s corner is sliced out for another. News is Barella has a hamstring injury.

69 mins-Close Inter clear the corner but Milan scrap for it and it ends up at Zlatan’s feet. Its a half chance but across the years that’s all he’s needed, on this occasion he curls it wide with his weaker foot. Good effort.

71 mins-Substitution Tonali off, Ismael Bennacer on.

72 mins-What A Chance Dzeko battles well for a ball in the box and squares it to Vidal on the penalty spot but his side footed effort is blocked, not once but twice. Best chance of the half.

75 mins-Injury Inter have Milan camped in their box and as Dzeko releases the ball to Darmian he signals for a change. He’s off for Joaquin Correa with Denzel Dumfries also coming on for Darmian who is also hobbling. No surprise as the former United man has ran his socks off. Arguably Inter’s best player.

The Milan fans weren’t happy they put the ball out for the injured Dzeko they wanted their side to play on.

80 mins-Milan press Inter really well their and win the ball back, it comes to Rebic and he does well to win a free kick in a dangerous position, by that I mean shooting distance for Ibrahimovic who immediately grabs it.

82 mins-Good Save It’s a good strike from the big Swede but it appeared to go through the Inter wall a little too easily. Despite this Handanovic was equal to it.

83 mins-Great Chance From nowhere Milan now have Inter penned in and a ball is whipped into the ball stick and Ibrahimovic knocks it down for Bennacer but his first time side foot volley is smashed over the bar.

84 mins-Substitutions Both teams making changes. Tiemoue Bakayoko is on for Krunic and two for Inter with Alexis Sanchez coming on for Martinez and Federico Dimarco coming on for Bastoni.

86 mins-Milan continue to press for the winner as a corner is whipped in and flicked into the arm of Correa by Rebic with the hosts asking for a penalty, but its rightly waved away. The ball then comes back in and again Ibrahimovic knocks it down for anyone to run onto by Rebic just fails to make contact. Inter can’t seem to get out now.

88 mins-Milan again come forward and Saelemaekers screams for a penalty as he cross is blocked by the arm of Vidal but it seemed the correct decision.

90 mins-WOW Off the post and then a poor miss as Milan wonder how they haven’t taken the lead. Saelemaekers drives forwards and fires a low drive from distance that cannons off the post. The ball presents itself to Kessie on the penalty spot and he places it wide. Milan really pressing for the three points now.

Three minutes added on will there be late drama….

90+2-Inter now have a free kick in a good position as Tomori is penalised for a hand ball. Another correct decision from Daniele Doveri.

90+3-The free kick is cleared by Ibrahimovic is that all there is?

It ends all square in an eventful game between these two footballing giants. Inter dominated for large parts of that second half but in those final 10 or so minutes Milan got on top of Inter and could’ve pinched it themselves. Overall a fair result in my opinion despite Inter having a penalty saved.

The home side may be kicking themselves at the fact they could’ve leapfrogged Napoli into first by two points but as it stands the both of them sit on 32 points after 12 games. Inter remain in third on 25 points.

Well that certainly lived up to the hype. Both teams had moments where they’ll feel they should’ve won it but in the end I’m sure both will be grateful they didn’t lose it. A fantastic advert for Italian football and all that is left for me to do is to thank you for following my live blog. Any feedback is appreciated.
