Home   /   Besiktas vs Ajax: As it happened

Hi, I’m Harry Dodds and welcome to Overtime’s coverage of the early kick off in tonight’s Champions League fixtures, as struggling Besiktas take on an Ajax side who have already booked their place in the last 16.

The hosts will be determined to try and salvage a place in the Europa League, as they look in danger of going out of Europe altogether.

6: First good chance of the game goes the way of the visitors as Schuurs takes on a shot from distance, but it doesn’t do enough to trouble Mert in the Besiktas goal.

9: The ball drops for Daramy after an Ajax corner, but the Dutchman just misses the target.

11: So close. Rosier cuts inside and curls a shot into the top right, but narrowly misses the target hitting the post. That would have been a goal to remember for the right-back.

13: David Neres takes on a curling shot from a loose ball, but just sends it wide of Mert’s post. Ajax have had the bulk of the early chances so far.

16: Tadic’s header from Berghuis’s cross goes high and wide from a tricky angle. Ajax are knocking on the door but they will be weary of besiktas’s threat

20: Calls for a handball from Besiktas and the referee is checking VAR, and after a quick glance he points to the spot. Mazraoui has both hands up and the ball strikes his hand to give Besiktas a spot kick

GOAL: Besiktas 1-0 Ajax (Ghezzal 22′ pen)

26: Mert saves a close range effort from Tadic and boots it long to a wide open Larin, but he is leaning just offside when the ball comes.

28: Curling effort from Daramy is saved well by Mert. Ajax will want to get back on level terms as soon as possible.

30: Besiktas catch Ajax on the break and Larin forces a strong hand from Onana. Besiktas are playing well so far and are starting to put Ajax on the back foot with quick counter attacks.

34: Brilliant individual play from Nkoudou, who’s low cross finds texeira, but the Brazilian can’t divert it goalward and it goes out for an Ajax goal kick

39: Chance for Ajax as Daramy finds Tadic down the left, who’s high cross is brilliantly recovered by some skilful footwork from David Neres, but no end product to trouble Besiktas

41: Larin would have been in if not for a sloppy first touch, and the ball is well defended by Ajax

41: Bad miss for Ajax as the ball finds Daramy in space in the box, but he screws the shot well high and wide

42: Another chance wasted by Larin as he forces another good save from Onana, but the shot lacks the precision to find the back of the net. Will Besiktas live to regret these wasted chances? Ajax have the firepower to punish them.

45: Daramy scuffs an acrobatic shot from close range. He had to sort his feet out there if he was going to have any chance of troubling Mert.

Half Time: Besiktas 1-0 Ajax

So far so good for Besiktas, leading at the interval through Ghezzal’s emphatic penalty. But both sides have had chances to score.

Erik ten Hag will be looking for a response from his side in the second half. With chances being wasted at both ends the game is hanging in the balance. Can Ajax get back on level terms, or even turn the tie around to snatch all three points?

Second Half Kick Off:

46: Ajax have made a change at the interval, as Daramy makes way for former West Ham forward Sebastian Haller. Daramy struggled in the first half, and ten Hag has opted for an early change up front in the hope that they won’t continue to waste chances.

51: Berghuis with a decent shot at goal forces Mert into a strong save. The first sign of a threat from either side in this half.

GOAL: Besiktas 1-1 Ajax (Haller 54′)

And wouldn’t you know it? Nine minutes after coming on Haller gets on the end of Tagliafico’s pass across goal, and the Ivorian slides it into the empty net.

Haller has taken to Ajax like a duck to water since moving to the Johan Cruyff Arena in January.

58: Another chance for Haller as Neres’ cross finds the goal scorer, who brings the ball down but then sends the shot over.

59: Besiktas make their first change as Can Bozdogan replaces Alex Teixeira

61: Chance for Ajax as Tagliafico’s header from Tadic’s cross just strays wide of the target. Ajax are looking a much more composed outfit since their goal.

62: Free-kick wasted by Besiktas as Pjanic’s effort goes high and wide. The next goal will be crucial in this game.

67: Second substitution for Besiktas as Michy Batshuayi comes on in place of their goal scorer Rachid Ghezzal.

A wide free kick is sent into the area for Ajax, and Haller is on hand to tap home from Martinez’s touch on. This man just can’t stop scoring.

71: Bozdogan’s long range effort goes well over. A wasted chance for Besiktas as they now trail.

72: Substitution for Ajax. Jurrien Timber comes on replacing Noussair Mazraoui.

Ajax send Robert Lewandowski a friendly warning after Haller’s second half brace against Besiktas sees him edge towards the Pol on the goal scorers’ chart.

77: Two more changes for Ajax as Daley Blind replaces Nicolas Tagliafico, and Devyne Rensch replaces Perr Schuurs.

85: The referee dishes out a yellow card for the first time this match, and it goes to Sebastian Haller for a foul.

86: Chance for Besiktas as Hutchinson’s close range effort flies high and wide. They have really struggled this second half.

88: Ajax are in total control of this one, and ten Hag’s side have looked dominant in this second half with the half time substitution proving to be instrumental.

88: Cyle Larin is shown a yellow card for Besiktas.
90+3: It’s all Ajax in these late stages, and Haller almost had a hat-trick when he turned home Neres’ pass, but the Brazilian is flagged offside. the goal is checked by VAR, and the decision is no goal.

Full-Time: Besiktas 1-2 Ajax

It’s all over at Vodafone Park, as Ghezzal’s first half penalty saw Besiktas take the lead, but an inspired decision from Erik ten hag as he brought on Sebastian Haller at half time, who scored twice to turn the game around for Ajax.
