Why Virgil van Dijk is the best player in the Premier League

By Jamie Balding

Virgil Van Dijk is the best player in the Premier League, and is a strong contender for the PFA Players’ Player of the Season.

Having joined Liverpool from Southampton for an estimated fee of £70 million, he has completely transformed the Reds’ defence.

The Dutch central defender has been a colossus this season, having been dribbled past on zero occasions after coming up against the likes of Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Alongside this, Van Dijk has not lost an aerial battle since January, winning 147 in total, which shows how much quality he possesses.

There are arguments that both Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard should both be in contention for Player of the Season after their current form for their clubs, but the only mention should be Van Dijk.

Having conceded just 17 goals this season and having their joint best point total at this stage of the season, Van Dijk would be the main reason Liverpool do win the Premier League.

Since the start of the season the odds on the Netherlands captain being Player of the Season has been cut down from 125-1 into a mere 10-11.

Last season, there was talk about how the Real Madrid pairing of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane could potentially be better centre halves than Van Dijk, however this season there’s no debate around it, with Real Madrid conceding a total 32 goals this season compared to Liverpool’s 17.

Jamie Carragher agrees with this and said: “Virgil Van Dijk should be PFA Player of the Year.

“He looks like a man playing in a kids’ game. He’s playing against some of the top players in European football in the Premier League, but everything is so easy.”

Alongside Carragher, Graeme Souness added: “You can say one player doesn’t make a difference, but I think when you are that good, you are an exception. He would be the outstanding centre-half around right now.”

Van Dijk has been the main constant in the Liverpool side this season, with fans alike calling for him to be given the captain’s armband after just 18 months with the club due to his leadership qualities he shows on the pitch.

If Van Dijk doesn’t get the PFA Players’ Player of the Season award for his contribution this season then it would be nothing short of a calamitous decision as he has performed to a world class standard every week, and when comparing that to others, we see a huge difference in the quality of Van Dijk, and that is why he should be named as the best player in the league.
