Why the USWNT are favourites for the World Cup

The USA are the favourites for the Women’s World Cup in France this summer.

The USWNT won the 2015 iteration of the tournament in Canada, crushing Japan 5-2 in the final.

The Stars and Stripes are in Group F with Thailand, Chile and Sweden. The Sweden national team is currently ranked ninth in the Fifa Women’s World Rankings.

Alex Morgan and the rest of the squad will be eager to get revenge after Sweden eliminated them after penalties in the quarter-finals of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Carli Lloyd playing for the Houston Dash

Carli Lloyd has amassed an astonishing 265 caps for the national team to date and will be looking to lead the USA to their fourth World Cup.

Her hat-trick was the difference in the 2015 final, and is in the top 10 for caps, goals and assists in the nation’s history.

Lloyd was also named the best player and the top scorer in the 2015 World Cup.

At 9/4, the USA are heavy favourites for the tournament. They have made the final four at every single Women’s World Cup, dating back to 1991.

Their fiercest competition comes from France, Germany and the Norway.

France are the hosts and are currently ranked second in the world.

Germany won back-to-back titles at the 2003 and 2007 World Cups and have forever been a powerhouse in women’s football.

Norway will also be a threat with star striker Ada Hegerberg recently winning the inaugural Ballon d’Or Féminin. The Lyon forward is just 23 and has scored 120 goals in her 95 appearances to date for Les Lyonnaises.
