US Masters Preview

The 2017 Masters Tournament tees off in just over a week and marks the 20th anniversary of Tiger Woods’ historic win back in 1997.

The world’s best players including Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Phil Mickelson will be taking on the tricky Augusta course in a bid to win the coveted Green Jacket.

In 1997, Tiger Woods made his first Masters appearance as a professional golfer, and went on to produce one of the best rounds of golf the world has ever seen.

After being the first to win the US amateur title three years in a row, Woods came into Augusta being the talk of the tournament and bookies’ favourite. The 21-year-old showed no fear as he went head-to-head with stars such as Nick Faldo and Tom Watson.

Woods produced a record-breaking performance and went on to win the Green Jacket, beating runner-up Tom Kite by a whopping 12 shots. He made history by becoming the youngest ever player to win the tournament as well as being the first black man to win a major golfing championship.

However, Woods looks set to miss the 81st edition of the Masters due to persistent back troubles.

Reigning champion Danny Willett will be available to compete after the early arrival of his baby Zachariah enabled him to take part after initially thinking he wouldn’t be able to play.

The tournament begins on Thursday April 6 and will end on Sunday April 9.
