UFC 230: Cormier taps out Lewis

By Alex Best

Daniel Cormier retained his UFC Heavyweight title, defeating Derrick Lewis by submission in the second round to set up a potential fight against Brock Lesnar.

Cormier dominated from start to finish landing heavy strikes and takedowns in the first round. Lewis had no answer for the two-weight world champion, leaving fans questioning when Cormier would win the bout, rather than if.

The second round began similarly to the first. Cormier dominated, as Lewis threw heavy punches, but had trouble connecting. At the 2:14 mark of the second round Lewis tapped out after Cormier locked him into a rear-naked choke.

In his post-fight interview, Daniel Cormier continued to call out Brock Lesnar, going as far as to ask him to bring his WWE title.

In the co-main event, Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza defeated Chris Weidman by TKO in their Middleweight bout. The fight ended in the third round after a swift right hand caught Weidman off-guard leaving the referee no choice but to end the fight.

This win leaves Jacare in a strong position for a title fight, but hinders Weidman’s chances, who would have been next to fight the winner out of Robert Whittaker and Kevin Gastelum, after beating Gastelum last July.

Jared Cannonier defeated David Branch by TKO in what was his first bout at middleweight following two consecutive losses at Light Heavyweight. He ended the fight in the second round with a right hand to Branch’s chin which caused a massive upset as he was a 300+ underdog.

In other fights, Karl Robertson defeated Jack Marshman by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27) after exceptional ground work and takedowns leaving the judges with an easy decision to make.

Israel Adesanya continued to stay undefeated after beating Derek Brunson by TKO which gave him a massive win, catapulting expectations for the bright prospect.
