Shohei Ohtani: Baseball’s Next Superstar

Shohei Ohtani has been identified as the next big talent in baseball but before the start of his first MLB season let’s have a closer look at the Japanese star.

Ohtani has become a household name for baseball fans before he has even pitched a ball in America.

The Asian starlet has attracted interest from the biggest teams in baseball, including the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers, before signing with the Los Angeles Angels in mid-December.

The 6ft 5in pitcher’s fastballs average an impressive 96.2mph with triple digit speeds not uncommon to the Japanese sensation.

Many pundits are claiming that Ohtani is Japan’s best pitcher as well as one of the country’s best hitters.

In 2016 Ohtani was named the NPB Pacific League’s best pitcher as well as its best designated hitter.

The Ōshū born star boasts 1170 plate appearances, 166 RBI (runs batted in) and a batting average of .286 throughout his five seasons in Japan according to baseball-reference.com.

Ohtani has often caused pundits to draw a comparison between himself and the late great Babe Ruth due his stunning performances for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, possibly one of the most honourable comparisons for any baseball player.

Ohtani kick-starts his MLB career at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum when the Angels face the Oakland Athletics in the opening day of the regular season on March 29.
