Piquet fastest in first Rome practice

Nelson Piquet Jr was fastest during the first free practice session for the Rome ePrix.

The season one champion set a time of 1:36.134 around the 2.86km long circuit, edging Britain’s Sam Bird by less than a tenth.

Piquet’s Jaguar teammate Mitch Evans rounded the top three 0.542 second behind the Brazilian.

Championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne ended the session in fourth, 0.002 second behind Evans.

The Frenchman had several braking issues during the session, going into the run off areas on a number of occasions.

Sebastien Buemi was sixth fastest, with Andre Lotterer, Felix Rosenqvist, Jarome D’ambrosio and Lucas di Grassi rounding the top 10 at the end of the 45-minutes long session.

The session was brought to an abrupt end when Alex Lynn from DS Virgin made a mistake at turn one, going in to the law at the exit, destroying his front-left suspension.

The DS Virgin team now has 90 minutes to prepare the car for free practice two.
