Mother and son ready to take on Europe

A gymnastics duo from Hastings will soon be representing Great Britain at the 2018 TeamGym European Championships.

Samuel Clarke, an 18-year-old gymnast and coach at 1066 Gymnastics, has been selected for the GB senior men’s team that will be flying out to Portugal in October. This will be the teenager’s second time competing at the Europeans; in 2016 he was part of the junior men’s team who won GB’s first ever medal in the discipline, taking bronze in Slovenia.

He also recently won a silver medal at the TeamGym British Championships in Newcastle. At the British, he competed a double twisting double back somersault, also known as a “full full” for the first time.

1066 placed second out of eight teams at the British.

He also successfully landed a 2.5 twisting double somersault on trampette, a skill which resulted in a broken femur back in 2015. Sam reflected on this experience and took the chance to show off his new skill:

Also at the heart of the club’s success, is Sam’s mother. Clare Clarke is a TeamGym level 5 high performance coach at 1066 and has been attending national training clinics alongside Sam throughout the year.

She enjoyed her son’s success at the 2016 Euros as part of the men’s coaching team, and this year has been selected at the unit leader for the senior and junior women’s teams.

The class of 2016 celebrate winning GB’s first ever European medal.

Clare spoke about her excitement and responsibilities for the team for the upcoming championships:

The championships will take place in Odivelas between the 17-20 October, and the entire GB delegation will be hopeful of a first-ever senior European medal for British TeamGym.
