Match Report: Juventus 3-0 Atletico Madrid

By Alex Nicolaou

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick to complete a historic comeback in Turin and send Juventus through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

A first-half header from Ronaldo gave the hosts all the momentum to claw back their two-goal deficit from the first leg.

Then, just three minutes after the restart, Ronaldo leapt highest again and his header proved too powerful for Jan Oblak.

The comeback was complete when Angel Correa brought down Federico Bernardeschi in the area, handing Juventus a penalty just six minutes from time.

Up stepped the all-time leading Champions League scorer to complete his hat-trick and a spectacular comeback at the Allianz Stadium.

The Old Lady started on the front foot and were soon denied a goal. Giorgio Chiellini’s effort from six yards was ruled out due to a previous foul on Oblak by Ronaldo.

Leonardo Spinazzola made an impressive European debut for the hosts and combined well with Bernardeschi to create plenty of chances throughout the game.

Forwards Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata often found themselves defending in order to hold Atletico’s two-goal advantage, but in the end Massimiliano Allegri’s men overcame one of Europe’s tightest defences to progress into the last eight.

Juventus, currently 18 points clear in Serie A, will be focusing all their attention on the Champions League, while this defeat means Atletico will miss the chance to play the final at their home ground, Wanda Metropolitano.
