Match Report – Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 Huddersfield Town

Brighton finally secured their first league win of 2019 at the eight time of asking thanks to Florin Andone’s 79th-minute header.

It was a game for the purists, but Chris Hughton won’t care as his side created a five-point cushion above the bottom three.

Town are rooted to the bottom of the table, but the midweek win over Wolves seemed to have given them a confidence boost at the start of this game. Steve Mounie was slipped through, but his square ball was gathered by Maty Ryan.

Much like recent games at the AMEX, this one was tight, bordering on scrappy. Some Seagulls fans thought they had a penalty when there was a coming together between Yves Bissouma and Erik Durm in the penalty area. However, Mike Dean made the right call giving Durm the free-kick as replays show Bissouma stood on his leg.

The Terriers weren’t playing like a team bottom of the league. Alex Pritchard troubled Ryan without a longshot which the Austrailain fumbled before punching out of danger.

Alireza Jahanbaksh came closest for the home side in the first 45, the Iranian coming in off the left prior to crashing a shot onto the crossbar. It was a moment where everybody, including Jonas Lossl in the Terriers goal, just stood still and watched the ball make its path.

Just before the break, Lewis Dunk headed over Anthony Knockaert’s corner. Brighton had the first chance of the second half too, Bissouma threaded a ball through to Murray but the veterans shot was blocked by a sliding Terence Kongolo.

Then Bernardo played Jahanbaksh through on goal who couldn’t beat Lossl. The Seagulls were coming closer and in turn, the AMEX was getting noisier.

But Huddersfield were always a threat, Ryan was reminded of this when he took Phillip Billing’s effort from an angle into his grasp.

After 70 minutes substitute Andone forced Lossl into a smart one-handed save. By this point Town seemed to be more interested in getting men behind the ball and looked to hit the sea-siders on the counter.

It was looking bleak for Brighton, was it going to be another tally on their search for a league win in 2019? Well, Andone had other ideas. With ten minutes to go a short free-kick resulted in Jose Izquierdo finding Knockaert who curled in a cross allowing the Romanian to head home.

Moments later Steve Mounie’s header was tipped over the crossbar by Ryan. The slow burner of a game was finally heating up, but the Seagulls withered the storm and game away with the victory.

Brighton travel north next Saturday to play Crystal Palace in the M23 derby while Huddersfield continue their fight against relegation at home to Bournemouth.
