Match Report: Arsenal 0-0 Sporting Lisbon

By Alexander Robertson

Arsenal progressed through to the knockout stages of the Europa League even though they were held to a goalless draw with Sporting Lisbon.

A win would’ve ensured progression but due to group rival Qarabag’s 1-0 win over Vorskla Poltava, Arsenal’s point on the night was enough.

However, the game was perhaps overshadowed by the awful injury sustained by 27-year-old England forward Danny Welbeck.

While trying to latch on to a Stephan Lichtsteiner cross, Welbeck landed awkwardly on his right ankle and received treatment on the pitch for several minutes before being stretchered off and rushed to hospital.

Welbeck’s replacement Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang added pace up top for the Gunners and always looked lively on the ball, but it still wasn’t enough as they squandered several half chances.

Sporting provided even less in front of goal, as they struggled to maintain possession and break down a well-organised Arsenal back-line in a game that was played mostly in their own half.

Sporting’s Jeremy Mathieu was sent off with five minutes to go after bringing down Aubameyang, who was racing towards goal.

The resulting free-kick was skied over the bar by Aubameyang, summing up Arsenal’s lacklustre performance in front of goal.

Despite both teams’ best efforts, they were unable to break the deadlock and had to share the points evenly.
