Manchester City 6-0 Shakhtar Donetsk: Player Ratings

By Samuel Wigram

Man City

31 Ederson (6) – Apart from an early save in the first half, Ederson was hardly troubled the whole game with his footwork and distribution were very accurate.

2 Kyle Walker (7) – Had plenty of the ball and made a few over-laps, with his strength and pace the Shakhtar player struggled to get past him.

5 John Stones (6) – It was an easy night for Stones as he was striding into tackles and interceptions to snuff out any Shakhtar hopes and was never flustered in possession.

14 Aymeric Laporte (7) – Dealt with pressure well when with the ball and showed his pace when up against Taison and looks to be a very good centre-back.

35 Olexandr Zinchenko (6) – Was positioned at left back but spent a lot of the game stepping into the centre and gave City an overload in midfield.

20 Bernardo Silva (8) – Most attacks were started by Bernardo as his bag of tricks proved too much for the Shakhtar defenders as he continues to perform in De Bruyne’s absence.

21 David Silva (8) – Grabbing the first goal of the game, he was just a pleasure to watch as his precision passing was able to unlock Shakhtar.

25 Fernandinho (8) – Dominated the midfield with a high press, breaking up any Shakhtar attacks and has yet again proven why he is one of the best central defensive midfielders right now.

26 Riyad Mahrez (8) – Sticking wide to the touchline, he stretched Shakhtar out of shape, brilliantly setting up the first goal and even grabbing himself a goal late on.

7 Raheem Sterling (9) – Another great display from the Englishman as he controversially won his side a penalty and embarrassed the defenders all game, with his goal continuing his fine form.

33 Gabriel Jesus (9) – Scored twice from the penalty spot and chipping the keeper to grab his third, his hard work off the ball paid off but could have scored more, missing many chance from open play.

30 Nicolas Otamendi – N/A

3 Danilo (5) – Came on for Walker and was attacking more than defending but still wasn’t trouble whilst on the pitch.

18 Fabian Delph (5) – Came on for Fernandinho late on and had little to do as the game was coming to a close.

8 Ilkay Gundogan (6) – Had a hand in the fifth goal after coming on for David Silva but the damage was already done to Shakhtar as they proved to be not a threat up top.

Shakhtar

30 Andriy Pyatov (4) – Was unable to stop most of the City goals and wasn’t helped by the defence in front of him as he struggled the whole game.

22 Mykola Matvyenko (5) – Made a few bursts up the pitch with the ball but other than that he was on the back foot defending and was no match for Sterling.

2 Sergey Kriyvtsov (4) – A performance to forget as the City press proved too much for the centre back as the ageing defender was passed easily too often.

44 Yaroslav Rakitskiy (4) – Could not deal with City’s attacks and panicked on the ball went put under pressure.

31 Ismaily (5) – Up against Mahrez, Ismaily did not have the tools to stop Mahrez’s trickery as most of the attacks came down from his side. A night to forget for Ismaily.

6 Taras Stepanenko (6) – Made a few key blocks to stop City scoring more but was out run most of the time and couldn’t hold the City players back as they attacked wave after wave.

27 Maycon (5) – Like Stepanenko he failed to get a foot-hold in the game as he was dominated by Fernandinho’s excellent display.

7 Taison (6) – Was the only player willing to carry the ball up the pitch and looked a threat most of the time but his final pass was poor, struggling to create any chances.

74 Viktor Kovalenko (4) – Did more defending than attacking as he didn’t prove to be much of an outlet for his side.

50 Sergiy Bolbat (5) – Ventured up the pitch a couple of times but was more focused on denying Walker the chance to overlap but failed to do so continuously.

10 Moraes (5) – Other than a rare shot early in the game which was easily saved, he hardly touched the ball as the City defenders did a job on him.

Substitutes

1 Oleksiy Shevchenko – N/A

5 David Khocholava – N/A

8 Olarenwaju Kayode – (4) Felt sorry for him as he came on to the pitch in where the game was already won and was primarily used just to try and stop City scoring more.

23 Wellington Nem – (4) Brought on as a fresh pair of legs, he also was out run the whole time he was on the pitch.

2 Bohdan Butko – N/A

9 Dentinho – N/A

21 Alan Patrick Lourenco – (4) Unlike the City substitutions he was ineffective the whole time he was on the pitch.
