Can Manchester City win the Champions League?

Manchester City’s emphatic Premier League season has been nothing short of exceptional, but is there also a possibility for the City fans to dream of winning the Champions League alongside it?

The Sky Blues have already claimed one piece of silverware this season with a convincing 3-0 win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup Final.

Pep Guardiola has brought a refreshing look to this City team, and they have lost just once in the league this season.

Obviously, they have the quality in their side to win the league title, but Guardiola’s tactics must also be credited with putting the side where they currently are and deservedly so.

Domestic success is apparent, but do they have what it takes to win the Champions League?

City eased through their group with five wins out of six, losing the last game having already qualified.

They then brushed aside FC Basel in the first leg of their round of 16 tie, returning from Switzerland with a 4-0 win.

However, they did lose the second leg at home, which perhaps suggest that this Manchester City side have a tendency to get complacent in certain situations and that could come back to bite them against better teams.

Alan Shearer certainly feels that City can win it, but suggests it will be difficult to predict: “What stood out for me in Cardiff last May was Real’s speed of thought and passing. That is the way City play, of course, but can they do it against the very best teams in Europe? It is going to be very interesting to find out.”

City’s attack is youthful and free flowing, with the success of their wide players such as Leroy Sane being a major factor in the damage they have dealt to sides this season.

Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva are also pivotal to this Guardiola side, and although they have experience in the Champions League, do those younger wide players such as Sane have what it takes to step up to the big occasion?

It is possible that City will have to overcome the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich to win the Champions League, and they are yet to face a challenge of that calibre this season.

There is no questioning that this Manchester City side have the quality, desire and mentality to win this competition, but historically they have struggled to hit the heights on the European stage.

Although City will not want to draw the likes of Barcelona, at the same time those sides will want to avoid Guardiola’s side too, and it is very difficult to predict who will win the Champions League.
