DIARY: 2018 Olympic Torch Relay

Overtime spoke to 2014 sport journalism graduate, Ben Nagle, about his recent trip to South Korea to carry the Olympic torch.

“As soon as we arrived at Busan airport, we were swamped by photographers and media at the airport, and it’s at that moment that you fully understand how big a deal it is,” said Ben.

Ben was part of a group chosen by Samsung to go to South Korea and carry the torch for a few hundred meters, thanks to his job as a sport journalist for MailOnline with all expenses being covered by the telecommunication giant.

“In all honesty, I didn’t know too much about winter sports until getting the call to go to Korea,” he said. “I travelled out there and spent a lot of time with snowboarder Jamie Nicholls and skier Rowan Cheshire, so some research into both of them really opened my eyes to how exciting it is to watch and how technical and difficult their sports are.

“They treated us like royalty while we were out there and I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity.”

The Olympics begin in less than two months with the opening ceremony being scheduled for February 9.
