Arsenal 2-0 Brighton: Seagulls outgunned at the Emirates

by Adam Powers

A wonderful team goal finished by Alex Iwobi sealed Arsenal a comfortable 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in Sunday’s lunchtime kick-off.

The home side were quicker out the blocks and their pressure paid dividends in the 16th minute when left-centre-back Nacho Monreal drilled a loose, bobbling ball home from 12 yards, after a free-kick into the mixer from Granit Xhaka disorientated the Brighton defence.

The away side complained the ball had gone out of play before Lacazette headed it back into danger, but referee Kevin Friend waved away the claims.

Hughton’s men came close in the 22nd minute after a neatly executed set-piece routine. After flirting with a cross into the area, Solly March was rolled the ball 25 yards out and struck it forcefully, only to be denied by the post.

Despite Brighton’s promising start to the second half, Arsenal’s front line created a goal typical of their classy passing style. A pinball-esque passing sequence between Lacazette, Ramsey and Sanchez ended with the latter cutely back-heeling the ball into the path of Alex Iwobi, who lashed his finish past Mathew Ryan from just inside the box.

Alexis Sanchez desperately tried to etch his name on the scoresheet, heading Arsenal’s waves of attack. The Chilean did not manage to in the end, but his lively performance was a promising sight for Arsenal fans, as they enter the international break level with Chelsea, while Brighton are two points off the relegation zone.
