Arsenal

Petr Cech – 6

A quiet night for Cech as Sporting posed virtually no trouble to his goal with the Czech ‘keeper not having to make a single save.

Stephan Lichtsteiner – 6

Worked hard down Arsenal’s right flank but to no avail in an attacking sense. Prevented Sporting attackers on several occasions. Went off late with a hamstring injury.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos – 7

Very solid performance from the Greek on his return from injury. Looked sharp and made some good tackles.

Rob Holding – 6

Did his job and kept a clean sheet. Made some smart tackles and will be knocking on Gareth Southgate’s door for future international games if he keeps up his form.

Carl Jenkinson – 5

Did his job defensively but had a very poor end product with two notably wild shots. Was substituted on the hour mark for Sead Kolasinac.

Aaron Ramsey – 6

Made some good recoveries and prevented several Sporting attacks. Lacked any sufficient end product going forward though.

Matteo Guendouzi – 7

Kept persisting for 90 minutes and put in several good crosses that led to nothing. Was visibly upset upon Danny Welbeck’s injury which may have affected his game.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 5

Not a good performance from the Armenian. Poor in the final third. Did not do his chances for a starting spot for the Premier League any good.

Emile Smith Rowe – 7

Looked sharp and kept going for the 90 minutes. He was arguably Arsenal’s best player. The 18-year-old did not look out of place and will be pushing for Premier League minutes now.

Alex Iwobi – 6

Not his best game. Nothing he tried came off but nevertheless he did not give up and kept persisting.

Danny Welbeck – 5

Welbeck was stretchered off with a leg brace after landing awkwardly on his ankle 25 minutes in and was rushed for an x-ray after being given oxygen on the pitch.

Substitutions

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 6

Had Arsenal’s best chance straight after half-time as his close-ranged volley hit the crossbar. Ran tirelessly but did not have any other notable contributions.

Sead Kolasinac – 5

Came on for 30 minutes but did not change the game. Linked well with Iwobi on the left but with no end product.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 5

Replaced the injured Lichtsteiner late on at right back. Did not have the time to effect the game especially whilst playing out of position.

Sporting CP

Renan Ribeiro – 7

Made several key punches from threatening crosses. Looked comfortable all night having to only face two shots on target.

Bruno Gaspar – 5

Did not provide any threat down Arsenal’s left hand side. Very quiet game with his most notable contribution being a yellow card for a cynical foul on Iwobi.

Sebastian Coates – 7

Marshalled a solid Sporting defence well. Made several key interceptions and tackles. A good return back to England for the former Liverpool and Sunderland player.

Jeremy Mathieu – 5

Defended well for 86 minutes alongside Coates. Was sent off with few minutes to go for a last man tackle on Aubameyang.

Marcos Acuna – 6

Got forward well on occasions and looked to threaten but to very little avail. His most notable contribution being a yellow card for descent.

Nemanja Gudelj – 5

Quiet game from the Serbian. Did little noteworthy defensively or offensively.

Abdoulaye Diaby – 5

The pacey forward ran tirelessly but was feeding off scraps. Projected a frustrated figure and was substituted late on.

Bruno Fernandes – 4

Poor performance from the 17/18 Liga NOS player of the season. Had no quality going forward and did little to enhance his name on the European stage.

Miguel Luis – 6

The young Portuguese midfielder worked hard all game. The 19-year-old did nothing wrong without setting the pitch alight.

Nani – 4

Sporting’s captain could not provide the spark he has been able to produce down the years. His formerly outstanding record against Arsenal for Manchester United was nowhere to be seen.

Fredy Montero – 5

The Colombian ran tirelessly and similarly to Diaby cut a frustrated figure feeding off scraps.

Substitutions

Bas Dost – 5

Sporting gave no service to the Dutch international who is known for being an aerial threat. Would have been a better decision starting him from the get go to give themselves a chance from set pieces.

Jovane Cabral – 5

Came on too late to make an impact.

Radosav Petrovic – 5

Came on too late to make an impact.
